In one sense, Nikolaiviertel is Berlin’s oldest neighbourhood: The foundations for the St. Nicholas Church were laid around 1230, almost 800 years ago. In another sense, it’s the newest: After the Second World War, only eight buildings remained standing and everything else has been completely rebuilt.
The neighbourhood is mostly known as a tourist trap — a Stalinist answer to Disney’s Main Street. But as this tour will reveal, on closer inspection Nikolaiviertel is strange and charming, absolutely unique, full of hidden history and easy-to-miss art.
Suggested donation is 10 euros per person, but any contribution is appreciated and none is required. You can also pick up a signed copy of the new book Revolutionary Berlin.
Our tour will start and end at the entrance of the St. Nicholas Church / Nikolaikirche at 14:00
