To kick off 2026, The Left Berlin Film Club is organising a special screening of Love, Deutschmarks and Death, a film about the Turkish Gastarbeiter music scene in Berlin in the 1970s.

60 years ago, the first Turkish guest workers came to Germany. They came because Germany needed them. And brought with them their families, their culture - and their music. A music through which the people found their own voice, always torn between being eternal strangers and arriving in a new homeland. Cem Kaya's documentary film takes an intensive and well-founded look at Turkish-German cultural history.

Love, Deutschmarks and Death won the Panorama Audience Award for best Documentary at the 2022 Berlinale and is highly recommended. The film is in German and Turkish with English subtitles.
