Summer Camp FAQ

Here are some answers to questions that have been asked already. If you have any further questions, please send them to

What is Summer Camp?

Summer Camp is an annual event organised by the LINKE Berlin Internationals. Its a week-end of workshops, culture and getting to know each other. It takes place in the Naturfreundehaus Hermsdorf (a kind of youth hostel) in the countryside but in easy reach of Berlin. There is a lake with swimming facilities 10 minutes walk away, which we’ll be visiting on Saturday afternoon (remember to pack swimming costume and towel).

You can see the draft programme for Summer Camp 2020 at

Who are the LINKE Berlin Internationals? Do I have to be a member to attend?

The LINKE Berlin Internationals is a group of (largely) non-German left wing activists, based in Berlin. We are affiliated to Die LINKE (the German left party) but not all of us are party members. Some of our group run the independent Website

Our main aims are to help the non-German left living in Berlin get more involved in German politics, and to make the German left more aware of international politics. For more information about the group, send a mail to

And no, you don’t have to be a member to attend Summer Camp

Do I need to register to attend?

Anyone can just turn up on the day, but as we are providing food, we’d like a decent overview of how many people will be there on each day. So, although you don’t have to register, it would be nice if you do (see bottom of this message to learn how)

Do I have to pay to attend?

All accommodation, workshops etc. is free. As the venue is in zone B of the Berlin rail network, travel costs are minimal.

What food is available?

We will be providing a warm meal on Saturday evening, Sunday breakfast and sandwiches/Brötchen for Sunday lunch. Vegan options are available for all meals. We will ask for voluntary donations to cover food costs and sell drinks at cost price on Saturday night. We encourage you to have lunch before you leave on Saturday.

How is accommodation organised?

The Naturfreundehaus has beds for around 30 people, which most years is enough for everyone. Because of COVID-19, we do not expect anyone to share a room (although if a group of you want to share, of course that’s fine). We will be giving priority booking to families and people with organising responsibilities for cooking, cleaning and organising the programme. After that, its first come first served until the 7 rooms are all booked.

What can I do if there’s no accommodation left?

The Naturfreundehaus has a large lawn which can be used for camping. If you bring a tent, you’ll be able to use that. If you’re willing to camp but don’t have your own tent, let us know and we’ll see if we can organise one.

Otherwise, the Naturfreundehaus is between half an hour and an hour from Berlin (depending on where you live). We are starting the Sunday programme an hour later than usual to accommodate people who are sleeping at home.

Can I come for just one day?

You can come and go as you please. Again, if you are only planning to come for one day, please let us know so we can organise the food accordingly.

Is the programme fixed?

The programme at gives a pretty accurate overview of what will be happening when. However, while most people giving workshops have agreed to speak in principle, we are still negotiating who will speak when. This may result in some workshops being swapped.

We will send out a final programme nearer the date

What language will it be in?

Everything will be in English. If you require translation into another language, please let us know and we’ll see what we can d

I am scared of COVID-19. Will it be safe?

We are all scared of COVID-19 and are taking all possible precautions, Here's what we can promise:

  • This year, accomodation will be very limited. No-one will be expected to share a room with anyone else. When we have filled the available rooms, so that people can camp (there is plenty of space). We have also changed our Sunday programme to accomodate people who want to sleep at home in Berlin (the venue is just 30-60 minuts from Berlin,., depending on where you live).

  • As long as the weather holds, all meetings will be outside and with social distatancing. We will issue weather updates nearer the date. Even if it does rain, there is plenty of space for outside meetings under cover.

Can I bring children?

Children are welcome. Again, if you let us know in advance, it will make planning easier. We can also put you in touch with other parents who are planning to attend.

How do I get there?

Everything will be taking place in the Naturfreundehaus Hermsdorf, Seebadstraße 27. A group of us will be going together from Berlin on the Saturday afternoon and returning to Berlin after the final meeting on Sunday.

Nearer the date, we’ll post more information about travelling together, and how you can get there if you travel on your own.
