Ten Years since the North African revolutions
Time & Location
About the Event
It is now 10 years since the so-called “Arab Spring” – an uprising which was not confined to the Arab world, nor was it over in Spring. After mass movements in Tunisia and Egypt overthrew corrupt dictators, a series of revolutionary events took place throughout North Africa. In other countries, significant movements like Occupy Wall Street in the USA and the Occupation of the Squares in Spain were directly inspired by these actions.
Central to the uprising was Egypt, where Tahrir Square became a symbol for the whole movement. In 2011, Hossam el-Hamalawy was a journalist and a central figure in the movement around Tahrir. He is currently based in Berlin. On 9th February, the Berlin LINKE Internationals are proud to organise a meeting with Hossam about his experiences.
Hossam will be talking about participating in a mass uprising and about state repression, about the Muslim Brotherhood and the Egyptian Left. About what happened then and what we can do now. The meeting will be in a Q&A format, with plenty of time for you to ask your own questions.
